Army SBIR Phase I is a short feasibility contract, typically 3–6 months and up to ~$250K. Army topics are increasingly invitation-style and tied to a real transition partner — a program office that actually wants the capability. That's the difference between SBIR that leads somewhere and SBIR that ends in a report on a shelf.
If you've already done Phase-I-equivalent work with other money — which many xTech winners have — you can pursue Direct-to-Phase-II. You submit feasibility documentation plus a Phase II proposal and go straight to a prototyping contract worth up to ~$2M, no separate Phase I award required.

Winners typically submit SBIR proposals within weeks of a competition's final selection — the xTech|Inversion round, for instance, names winners in September and invites Phase I proposals right after. Have your technical story, team, and transition narrative ready before you win, not after.
None of this is guaranteed. The lane is an invitation to submit, not a promise of an award, and every contract is competitive and at the Army's discretion. Treat the prize as validation and a head start — not a signed deal.
